Suárez was the key figure in the tactical revolution that transformed Italian football in the early 1960s – catenaccio or “the bolt”. Luis Suárez, who has died aged 88, was the only Spanish-born footballer to have been voted European Footballer of the Year, a title he won in 1960 indeed, many of his countrymen believe him to be the best exponent of the game their nation has yet produced, although the full flowering of his talent took place not in Spain but in Italy, where he twice steered Inter Milan to European Cup glory.
